Many of us remember being told the tale of Brigid’s cloak covering the plains of Kildare, but did you know that in ancient Irish mythology, Brigid was known as a fire goddess.
February 1st is also known as Imbolc, and marks the beginning of spring. It is one of four major “fire” festivals that are referred to in Irish mythology from medieval Irish texts. The other three are Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain. The word Imbolc means literally “in the belly” and refers to the pregnancy of ewes which occurs at the beginning of spring.
So let us celebrate the fiery goddess that symbolised the coming of spring after the long days of winter, and the bringing of new beginnings and new life!
