Bealtaine

Many of us remember the May processions, the celebration of Mary that was commonplace in a catholic childhood in Ireland. What we did not realise was that this celebration pre-dated christianity, and was an ancient pagan ritual welcoming in the summer.

The gathering of flowers and decorating a may tree, traditionally a white thorn, all harken from the pagan rituals that took place at Bealtaine.

Fire also plays a central role in Bealtaine rituals. The fire symbolises the return of the sun after winter. Certain rituals were to ensure a plentiful supply of sun for the growing season. Bonfires were lit and their flames, smoke and ashes were believed to have protective powers.

It marked the time on the farming calendar for cattle to be driven out to the summer pastures and rituals were performed to protect the cattle, crops and people, and to encourage growth. The people and their cattle would walk around the bonfire and in some cases leap over the flames or embers. These rituals involving fire were to symbolically burn and cleanse potentially destructive influences, marking a new beginning in the farming year.

Bealtaine

Is cuimhin le go leor againn mórshiúlta na Bealtaine, ceiliúradh Mhuire a bhí coitianta in óige Caitliceach in Éirinn. Rud nár thuig muid ná go raibh an ceiliúradh seo roimh an gcríostaíocht, agus gur deasghnáth págánach a bhí ann ag fáiltiú roimh an samhradh.

Bailiú bláthanna agus maisiú crann beanna, dealga bán go traidisiúnta, iad go léir ag dul ó na deasghnátha págánacha a bhí ar siúl i mBealtaine.

Tá ról lárnach ag tine freisin i deasghnátha na Bealtaine. Siombailíonn an tine filleadh na gréine tar éis an gheimhridh. Bhí deasghnátha áirithe ann chun soláthar flúirseach gréine a chinntiú don séasúr fáis. Lasadh tine chnámh agus creidtear go raibh cumhachtaí cosanta ag a gcuid lasracha, deataigh agus luaithreach.
